Advanced Dentistry

As part of the practice's overall care, the Helder Cosmetic & Family Dentistry team is skilled in several advanced dental techniques affording patients the ability to have those most familiar with their history perform the recommended treatment.

Services Include

Root Canal Therapy

Also referred to as endodontic treatment, a root canal is the removal of nerve tissue and the tooth's pulp chamber as a result of trauma or infection of the nerve. The area is then cleaned, shaped and decontaminated to repair and save the tooth that is badly decayed. Without such treatment, further dental issues may be caused, such as an abscess in the tooth, and other health issues may result.

At Helder Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, Dr. Helder will outline the proposed therapy, which may be performed in a single or multiple visits, based upon the severity of the damage. While most root canals are done as a result of a trauma or infection, others may be preventative in nature.

Extractions

There is any number of reasons in which one or more of a patient's teeth may need to be extracted. The removal can be a result of extreme decay or periodontal (gum) disease. It can be needed when root canal therapy is not a viable option. Other causes may include teeth, which may be out of place causing pain, instances when such removal can prevent future dental health issues or as a part of orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Helder carefully evaluates the patient's condition and medical history before recommending tooth extraction. He will explore other alternatives as removing teeth may result in future complications that can require additional dental treatment.

Bone Grafting

In order to reverse bone loss around one's teeth, Dr. Helder may recommend a patient undergo bone grafting to replace or reinforce the area effected by gum disease or trauma. Bone loss can also occur as a result of ill-fitting removable dentures.

At Helder Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, bone grafting can also be needed in cases of dental implants for augmentation, esthetics or both. As with any procedure recommended, Dr. Helder thoroughly explains all aspects of the treatment plan and on-going care.

Custom Mouth Guards

At Helder Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, the team recognizes the importance of protecting teeth from injuries caused by grinding or during sports and promotes the use of mouth guards in instances when damage may likely occur. Ideal for people at any age, these protectors should be used during contact sports as well as other non-contact and recreational activities, such as field hockey, gymnastics, and skateboarding. The guard will not only help prevent tooth loss or chipping but also protect against other mouth-related harm. For those who are prone to grinding their teeth while sleeping, specially-created guards, also known as a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint, may be designed and worn at night.

The custom-fitted mouth protectors are fabricated in-office by Dr. Helder, using an impression of the patient's teeth. It is created using a special, durable material to provide the best fit, comfort and protection. In addition, these unique guards can be personalized in terms of colors and design - making them fun to wear.
